Chinese Language Barrier

Hi everyone — I’m currently living in Taiwan (Taoyuan / Greater Taipei). I don’t speak Mandarin yet and work primarily in English.
My background is data center server hardware / integration: server deployment, troubleshooting, BIOS/BMC/firmware updates, OCP systems, PXE provisioning, hardware validation/testing, and FRU/part tracking/documentation.

I’d really appreciate advice on:

For roles like server integration / DC hardware support / test engineering in Taiwan, is Mandarin effectively mandatory?

Which company types/roles are more open to English-only candidates (multinationals, export-focused teams, DC operations, ODM/OEM labs, etc.)?

If Mandarin is needed, what level is typically enough (meetings, ticketing, reporting)?

What should I prioritize to increase my chances: Mandarin, certifications, or technical skills (Linux/networking/Python/automation/OpenBMC)?

Thanks in advance — I’m looking for honest, practical guidance.

Mandarin is not always mandatory, especially in multinational environments.

You can realistically apply to Google Taiwan, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS Taiwan projects), and G4S Taiwan — these organizations often operate in English, particularly in data center, infrastructure, or client-facing technical roles.

For local ODM/OEM labs, Mandarin is usually expected for daily coordination.

If Mandarin is needed, basic conversational level (handling tickets, simple discussions) is typically enough — not full business fluency.

To increase your chances:

Deepen Linux, networking, automation (Python/OpenBMC).

Highlight hands-on DC deployment and troubleshooting.

Learn practical Mandarin in parallel.

Multinationals + strong technical depth = your best strategy.

Hi:
I think you should like Taiwan very much, so you want to work and live here.
I suggest you have to join the Mandarin Class to learn and practice your Chinese for work and live, at least making sure you could have the communicate ability to your workmate.
If you want to choose the English-only work, maybe you could apply the work provide from International Company, like Dell, Nvidia, Google...etc, there will be works suitable for you.

It's my suggestion for you, hope it could help you.

Hi, if you agree that the ability to communicate is also part of the professional skill set for engineers, then you should definitely invest in learning Mandarin, especially when you plan to stay in Taiwan for more than a year. It'll help you blend in more easily at work and in life, and open up more job opportunities.

Unless your technical level on server/data center is highly niche and difficult to find local hires, or it's a company PR that needs to hire a certain percentage of foreign workforce, most companies in Taiwan (including Taiwan branches of international companies) still prefer Taiwanese candidates who speak decent English over foreign candidates who can't speak Mandarin at all.

As for the level required, it depends on your job function, since meetings, ticketing, and reporting are common tasks for all job functions. But I do recommend aiming for at least Basic. Once you get the hang of basic pronunciation and reading/listening, your Mandarin will improve over time. Here are free resources from the Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learning FYR. https://taiwancenter.taiwan-world.net/material/basic

In a nutshell, you don't need to be stressed out about learning Mandarin or advancing your technical skills first. They're both crucial to increasing your chances of getting hired in Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, or anywhere Mandarin is spoken.
